Why We Do This

From the desk of Dr. Jon Velez, :

Dear Community Member,

Jon Velez, M.D. - Emergency MedicineAccording to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. We know that 16 million people alive today have a history of heart attack, angina pectoris, or both. We know that this year, an estimated 1.2 million Americans will have a new or recurrent heart attack. We know that one-third of people who die of heart attacks have no warning.

The good news is that we also know that it's entirely possible to prevent a heart attack!

That's why Memorial Health System has taken the lead to combat heart disease in the Colorado Springs and southern Colorado community by developing an early detection program called What's My HEARTrisk? The What's My HEARTrisk? program consists of three simple steps that can literally save your life:

1. Learn: take the free, confidential risk assessment and learn if you are at risk.

2. Listen: if eligible, accept the free clinical screening where you'll hear what steps you need to take to improve your health.

3. Live: follow the clinical recommendations and visit your doctor for a longer, healthier life.

There is no doubt in my mind that What's My HEARTrisk? is a much-needed community service that can save countless lives. As an emergency medicine physician, I see all too many people visit the hospital for life-threatening heart conditions. It saddens me to know that many of these emergency visits could have been avoided had we only known about a developing condition sooner.

So please, ... Sit down. Go online. Prevent a heart attack.

Yours truly,
